<aside> ✳️ Perforated, toroidal, and annular shapes are various geometric forms with holes, loops, or rings. Perforated shapes have small holes or gaps distributed throughout the shape, while toroidal shapes are doughnut-shaped with a hole in the middle, and annular shapes are ring-shaped with a hole in the center.

These types of 3D shapes can be challenging to create in Adobe After Effects, and even more challenging to have them playback as a vector(Lottie) animation on the web. This is impossible without tedious path animation using traditional approaches, but Extrudalizer offers a unique and fast approach, which is why the Extrudalizer tool is so valuable.

The Extrudalizer tool, which is described in this Notion Help Center site, can be used to create these shapes quickly and easily. To make a perforated shape, start by designing a solid shape in Adobe After Effects using the pen tool. Draw the shape in sucha a way that the perforation (hole) is not created by using merge paths option or combining of multiple paths - you need to create the shape using single path.

To see how it is done you can have a look at the setup used by the Donut preset in the presets tab.

In Adobe Illustrator (or any similar vector editor) the workflow can be simple. Here’s an example how to create a letter “O”:

Once the shape is transferred to After Effects, you can set your Pre-Extrudalization settings to set up the look of your shape, and if Extrudalizing a shape that contains Bezier curves, pay attention to the Bezier field in the Extrudalization options. The higher the number the more rounded your shape will look, but, at the same time it will be more taxing on your computer. Generally speaking a circle, will look good using anywhere between 5 to 10 segments per Bezier curve.
